Under the White Tent: A Spiritual Retreat to Remember

In the heart of the lush English countryside, where rolling green hills stretch under skies that often kissed the earth with mist and sunshine in equal measure, a gathering of over one hundred Muslim women from across Europe—mostly from the United Kingdom—came together for something rare and extraordinary: a spiritual retreat grounded in tradition, knowledge, and sisterhood.

For several days, under a large white tent that became our shared sanctuary, we immersed ourselves in an experience that nourished both heart and mind. Led by our esteemed teacher, Anse Tamara Gray, alongside the wise and nurturing guidance of Anse Dahlia, Anse Marah, and Anse ‘Alimatunnisa, we journeyed through learning, reflection, and growth in a way that felt timeless—like a return to something we were always meant for.

Sacred Learning, Soulful Bonds

The theme of the retreat was Muslim History, and each day was an unfolding of stories—of our ancestors, of our foremothers, and of the path that brought Islam to where we are today. Anse Tamara taught with her characteristic depth and clarity, making history come alive in ways that both informed and inspired. Her teachings offered more than information; they were spiritual reminders of our place in a continuum of faith.

Anse Dahlia shared spiritual insights that opened our hearts to reflect deeply on the Divine, and Anse Marah, with her grace and gentle wisdom, reminded us of the beauty of gentleness in leadership and learning. Anse ‘Alimah brought a precision that rooted us firmly in sacred knowledge.

Beyond the sessions, the retreat was filled with activities—some educational, some just for fun, but all designed to deepen our connection. We painted, walked nature trails, and shared stories and dreams. We laughed together—deep, soul-cleansing laughter—and in quiet moments, we cried too, held in the safety of mutual care and compassion.

Nature as a Companion

The setting itself became a participant in our retreat. The beauty of nature was ever present: birdsong at Fajr, sunlight streaming through trees during Dhur, and a light breeze brushing our cheeks during outdoor reflections. Walking through the green fields, many of us felt a sense of renewed gratitude—subhanallah, how gently Allah calls us back to Him through the simple, uninterrupted majesty of creation.

Under the tent, every prayer we made together felt magnified. Surrounded by trees, under open skies, our voices joined in Qur’an, dhikr, and dua—lifting the veil between heaven and earth, even if only for a moment. In that space, we truly lived the concept of sisterhood and togetherness for the sake of Allah.

Perhaps what made this retreat so unique was the atmosphere of complete acceptance. Whether it was someone new to practicing or a seasoned student of knowledge, everyone was welcomed as they were. There was no pressure to perform, only encouragement to grow.

Women who had never met before became companions in prayer and confidantes in joy and sorrow. Strangers became sisters. It was a reminder that our ummah is truly one body—and when one part rejoices, we all do.

A Memory Etched in the Soul

As we packed our bags to leave, there was a bittersweet sense of longing. No one wanted to go. The retreat had been more than just a few days of workshops or classes; it was a spiritual realignment, a rekindling of faith, and a healing embrace of community. We had lived, although briefly, in a space that mirrored the harmony we all seek in our daily lives.

In the words of one participant:

It was like we were living in a dream of what a community should be—rooted in love, led by light, and rich in learning.

We left with hearts full and spirits uplifted, committed to carrying the light we had received into our families, communities, and lives. And although the tent has been packed away and the countryside is quiet once more, the impact of this retreat continues to ripple in ways only Allah can fully measure.
